Career Exploration

April 20, 2010

Thinking back to our field trip to KQED, I think that it was a really great experience, because in a regular class I probably wouldn’t have gone on a field trip at all. Some things that could have been better was being more interactive with the employees and their work at the station.

The work site was pretty much calm and very mellow. I actually thought it would be a little bit chaotic, because they might be setting up the set or just by running around doing a variety of things at a time. Another thing that I observed was that everyone was very cooperative with each other. They are really good at working as a team. The employees there are also very responsible because they have to always keep track of time.

While I was there I learned many things about the setting and how the building has to be customize in order to be used as a recording room for a TV station. In my opinion I think that’s really cool because you have a room within a room and no sound can get in or out. Another things that I found interesting was the radio station. But I also think its boring for the person who runs the show, because he/she has to stay in the room for the whole day. If they go out its only to get their food or something like that. Everything there is so organized for example the timing of the show. The person can only say a specific thing in a restricted amount of time or else they will get of the schedule.

Some things that I thought we would see was a show being broadcast, but we didn’t. I was really hoping for this, but I guess we can’t always get what we want. Well at least we got to see the radio station. When I was at KQED I was hoping that we would all be doing something like hands-on or things like that but we didn’t, I was kind of disappointed but it’s OK.

Overall, this field trip was a good experience. Not only because we got to see how a station like KQED works but because it gives us more knowledge about other things that we didn’t know. Hopefully we get to do something like this again.
